Every pole vaulter eventually hits the same wall. The technique is coming along, the swing feels better than it did in October, the pole is the right one — and the bar just won’t move. Nine times out of ten, the problem isn’t in the air. It’s in the run.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you when you start vaulting: the vault is a sprinting event with a gymnastics move attached to the end of it. Everything the pole gives back to you, you gave it first — on the runway, with your feet. Team Hoot, which builds one of the most widely used pole vault training systems out there, puts it about as bluntly as it can be put: “The easiest way to vault higher is by getting faster.” And Coach Karlie Place, whose beginner guide has introduced thousands of athletes to the event, says the same thing from the other direction: “The faster you are on the runway, the higher you will jump.”

So let’s talk about how to actually train that. Not “run more.” Not “do some sprints.” Real sprint mechanics, built for vaulters, and the honest reasons most high school athletes never develop them.

Why the Run Is the Whole Ballgame

Learn To Pole Vault frames the purpose of the runway in one sentence: runway length matters most in competition because “you are trying to reach your maximum velocity at launch.” That’s the job. Not “get to the box.” Not “hit your step.” Arrive fast, on balance, ready to plant.

Think about what that means practically. The pole doesn’t create energy — it stores and returns what you put into it. Every bit of bend you get comes from the speed and force you deliver at takeoff. A vaulter who shows up to the box under control but slow will always be capped, no matter how clean the swing looks. That’s why Apex Vaulting notes that athletes in the middle stages of development often look better on the runway than they really are — runway speed can mask technical deficiencies, and taking the speed away in drills exposes what’s actually there.

That cuts both directions, and it’s the whole reason sprint mechanics matter as their own training category. You need real speed and mechanics clean enough to survive at that speed.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Jump Days

Most young vaulters want to spend every practice taking full jumps. It’s the fun part. But Place is direct about it: “You might not want to hear it, but being a good pole vaulter takes so much more than just having as many jump days as you can.”

Her training framework rests on three pillars — sprint form, lifting, and core — and sprint form comes first for a reason. Her recommendation for how to build it is refreshingly simple:

  1. Practice your sprint form without the pole. Take the pole out of the equation entirely so you can isolate body position, posture, and mechanics.
  2. Ask your coach for feedback during sprint work, not just during jumps.
  3. Study proper running mechanics on video, and film yourself so you can compare.
  4. Only add the pole back in once your form has actually improved.

That last step is the one everybody skips. If your mechanics fall apart at top speed without a pole in your hands, adding a fourteen-foot lever is not going to fix them.

Building the Run: Drills That Actually Transfer

Apex Vaulting’s practice framework treats the vault as seven phases — pole carry, run, plant, take off, swing, turn, and push off — and structures warm-ups so that every phase gets addressed. On the running side, the drills they name are the classic sprint-development staples:

Notice the theme. These aren’t conditioning drills; they’re posture and ground-contact drills. Sprinting fast isn’t about moving your legs faster, it’s about hitting the ground harder in less time while your torso stays tall and quiet. That’s what B-skips and bounds teach.

From there, Apex layers in pole-specific running: one- and two-arm pole drops, and pole runs with and without jumps. This is the bridge. Sprint mechanics developed without a pole have to be re-learned with one, because the pole changes your arm action, your balance, and your rhythm. Do the free-sprinting work first, then earn the pole back.

Rhythm: The Piece Most Vaulters Miss

Speed is only half of it. The other half is cadence — arriving at the box with your steps organized instead of scrambling.

One of the best low-fatigue tools for this is the 12 Step Plant Walking Drill, taught by Rick Baggett. The athlete walks a line holding the pole upright while the coach counts the first eight steps in a “one, two, three, four” cadence, calling every other step. Then three quick steps follow, with a simulated plant and takeoff on the fourth. It builds the timing pattern of the approach without the pounding of full-speed reps — which means you can do a lot of them.

Pair that with what Learn To Pole Vault calls the vaulter’s internal “radar”: the trained ability to judge steps with near-perfect accuracy so you launch with optimal posture, balance, and timing. That radar isn’t a gift. It’s built through hundreds of repetitions of the same run, which is exactly why sloppy sprint mechanics are so expensive — inconsistent mechanics produce inconsistent steps.

Learn To Pole Vault also makes a point coaches should tattoo somewhere visible: the best coaches and vaulters “track what’s happening before the jump even begins.” If your practice notes only record bar heights, you’re grading the wrong exam.

How to Fit Speed Work Into a Real Week

Apex Vaulting organizes practices into three types, and it’s a clean model to steal:

  • Small days — drills only, from short approaches (roughly 1–3 lefts), with maybe some full jumps from a 3 at the end to see whether the skill transferred.
  • Medium days — drills from 2–3 lefts plus full jumps from 4–6 lefts.
  • Big days — start with short approaches or drills, then build to full competition-distance runs, beginning with “an easy grip, pole, and step, and then work your way up.”

Sprint mechanics work belongs at the front of every one of those days, while you’re fresh. B-skips and bounds done tired are just cardio with extra steps. And on non-jump days, that’s your window for pure sprint development — the fly runs, the acceleration work, the mechanical drilling with no pole anywhere near you.

The other thing worth building in: progress the approach length gradually. Apex’s guidance is to move athletes up in approach distance only as mastery shows up in drills — “working a drill to address a skill, and once the athlete shows enough mastery then move on to the next phase.” A vaulter who can’t hold mechanics from a 4 has no business running from an 8.
