Javelins
Javelins have two numbers that matter: the weight, set by your athlete's division, and the meter rating, which has to match how far they actually throw. Both are chosen on the product page.

Carry and protect what you just bought
A javelin that travels loose in a van gets bent tips and bent tails. A hard case is the difference between a $749 implement lasting one season or five.
Outfitting a throws group?
Javelin squads need a spread of ratings, not six copies of the same implement. Tell us your athletes' current marks and we'll build the set — school purchase orders welcome, written quotes sent for budget approval.
Javelin Weights by Level
| Level | Weight | Also Known As | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Youth & Middle School | 300–500 g | Youth / Development | USATF youth age groups throw lighter implements. Gill's competition lines start at 600g, so development weights come from the Petranoff range. |
| High School Girls & College Women | 600 g | 21.2 oz | The competition weight for high school girls and NCAA women — one implement carries an athlete from high school into college. |
| High School Boys & College Men | 800 g | 28.2 oz | The competition weight for high school boys and NCAA men, and the javelin most programs buy in quantity. |
Weights follow NFHS and NCAA standards. Youth divisions vary by age group and sanctioning body — if you're unsure what your athletes throw, ask Coach Dopp.
What the Meter Rating Actually Means
A javelin rated 60 m is engineered to perform for an athlete throwing around sixty meters. It is not a promise of distance, and buying "up" does not make an athlete throw farther.
Rating is really about how the shaft loads and releases. A javelin rated far beyond an athlete's range is too stiff for them to load, so it never returns energy properly and tends to flutter. One rated well under their range gets over-stressed and can bend.
Buy for the distance your athlete throws today, not the distance you hope they hit next season. If they're between ratings, or you're outfitting a squad with a wide range of abilities, send Coach Dopp your marks and he'll tell you what to order.
- Rating too high — shaft won't load, javelin flutters, distance drops
- Rating too low — implement is over-stressed and can take a set or bend
- Rating matched — clean load, clean release, predictable flight
Wind-specific tips (headwind / tailwind) only change results at elite distances. Most high school programs should buy universal.
