Walk into any high school throws shed and you’ll find the same thing: a milk crate of beat-up rubber discs, one nice steel-rimmed implement that somebody’s parents bought, and a coach who has never once been told what the difference actually is. Meanwhile the catalog you’re ordering from lists the exact same 1.6 kg discus at three different prices with three different percentages next to them, and nobody explains what those percentages do.

So let’s fix that. Rim weight is the single most important spec on a discus — more than the finish, more than the brand, more than the price. Get it right and your thrower gets a stable, carrying flight that rewards good technique. Get it wrong and they spend a whole season fighting an implement that’s either too forgiving to reward them or too twitchy to control.

Here’s how it works, in plain English.

What Rim Weight Actually Means

Every legal discus is the same total mass. A women’s discus weighs 1kg and is 18cm in diameter; a men’s discus weighs 2kg at 22cm in diameter, per World Athletics. High school boys throw a 1.6 kg implement in between.

What manufacturers can change is where inside that fixed mass the weight sits. A discus is a metal rim wrapped around a lighter core and side plates. Rim weight is expressed as a percentage — the share of the implement’s total weight that lives in the outer rim. A 75% rim discus has three-quarters of its mass out at the edge. An 85% rim discus has even more pushed to the outside, with a correspondingly hollow, lightweight center.

Why does that matter so much? Physics. FiberSport, who engineer the ORBIT series, put it about as simply as it can be put: “By placing more weight on the outer rim, we ensure the spin lasts longer. This allows the discus to stay stable in the air for a greater portion of its trajectory.” They add that “High rim weights increase centrifugal force. This force keeps the implement flat. It extends flight duration.”

In coach-speak: mass at the edge acts like a gyroscope. More rim weight = more rotational momentum for the same spin = a flatter, longer, more stable ride through the air. That’s the upside.

The Catch Nobody Mentions

Here’s the part that gets programs into trouble: a high-rim discus only pays off if the athlete can actually spin it.

That gyroscopic stability is generated by rotation. If your thrower isn’t producing real angular velocity at release, a heavy rim doesn’t stabilize anything — it just makes an implement that feels awkward in the hand and wobbles off the fingers. Worse, a high-rim discus is far less forgiving of a sloppy release angle. Gill describes their high-spin G-Series as an implement that “rewards a clean release with distance — but it punishes a poor one,” and FiberSport says outright that their highest-rim model is “highly sensitive to release angle.”

Their low-to-mid spin S-Series goes the other direction: a lower percentage of the total weight sits in the rim, which makes the implement easier to control and more forgiving of an imperfect release — a stable flight while technique is still coming together.

That’s the trade. Low rim = forgiving. High rim = higher ceiling, smaller margin for error. Neither one is “better.” One of them is better for your athlete, right now.

Matching Rim Weight to Your Thrower

Don’t Skip the Rubber Discus

One more thing, because coaches ask this every spring: yes, you still want a crate of rubber discs.

A solid one-piece rubber discus won’t chew up a gym floor or an athlete’s hand the way a steel-rimmed implement can, which is exactly why it’s the standard first discus and the one programs buy in quantity for daily reps. The workflow that actually works for a high school program looks like this:

  • Rubber discs for teaching the turn, indoor winter work, and high-volume technical reps

Buying one expensive high-rim discus and handing it to a freshman is the most common equipment mistake in high school throws. It doesn’t make them better — it makes them frustrated.

What to Actually Buy This Season

If you’re outfitting a program from zero, start here:

  1. Get the weights right first. Girls and NCAA women throw 1 kg, high school boys throw 1.6 kg, collegiate and open men throw 2 kg. Buy for the athletes on your roster, not the ones you hope to have.
  2. Buy rubber in bulk. Volume reps are where technique is built, and you don’t need a $300 implement to teach a turn.
  3. Buy one mid-rim competition implement per weight. Something in the 75–80% range covers the majority of a high school roster without punishing anyone.
  4. Save the high-rim purchase for the athlete who’s earned it. When a thrower’s release is repeatable and they’re spinning the implement well, an 83%+ rim is a genuine distance unlock — and it will feel like it the first throw.
